1 Departments of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Medicine, The Denver Clinic and St. Joseph Hospital
1. Nineteen patients with obstructive lung disease and associated large airway collapse have undergone tracheal support surgery.
2. Ten patients have expired (average survival 18 months), four from the primary lung disease or complications of surgery.
3. Nine patients are still living 8-56 months from time of surgery (average 31 months). Sustained improvement in two patients with preoperative MBC values of 12 and 18 L/min is documented.
4. Further observations on clinical and laboratory evaluation and surgical management are discussed. A new prosthesis for surgically supporting the collapsing trachea is described.
