Lower Esophageal Ring

Calvin Y. Hadidian M.D.1; Lester Kiefer M.D.1; and Robert F. Miller M.D.1

1 Departments of Thoracic Surgery, Pathology and Radiology, Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Maryland

A case of lower esophageal ring was managed surgically; we observed the clinical, radiologic and histopathologic aspects of the lesion for a six-year period. Submucosal fibrous ring was the essential feature of the pathologic changes encountered. It responded well to partial wedge resection and transverse closure. Symptomatic improvement has been excellent with no clinical evidence of gastoesophageal reflux.
