The acute effects of a pressure-cycled respirator, Bird Mark VII, and a volume-cycled respirator, Air Shields, were compared in 13 hospitalized patients with acute ventilatory failure caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The results indicate that, with matched pressure settings and optimal flow rates, the two respirators produced a similar total and effective alveolar ventilation, suggesting a similar effect upon the distribution of inspired gas within the lung. Both types of equipment are suitable for the management of patients with acute ventilatory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
