The area under 60 indicator-dilution curves obtained from 37 patients under different physiologic conditions and pharmacologic stimulation was calculated using semilogarithmic replotting and the Williams, O'Donovan and Wood equation. The cardiac outputs ranged from 3.05 L/min to 12.70 L/min. Comparison of results shows a correlation coefficient of 0.991 (r) and a r2 of 0.981 with a P value of <0.001. It is suggested that this method offers a precise and fast manual way of obtaining areas under indicator-dilution curves when a multiple purpose computer is not available.
