Proscillaridin and digoxin were compared in 15 heart-lung preparations. The ratios of therapeutic dose to lethal dose for each glycoside were approximately similar. Both glycosides increased myocardial efficiency and increased the production of ammonia by the heart muscle. Proscillaridin was more likely to increase myocardial efficiency than digoxin in the heart that has been depressed by sodium pentobarbital. The significance of these observations in the heart in failure due to organic disease remains to be elucidated.
