Mediastinal and Subcutaneous Emphysema Complicating Acute Bronchial Asthma

Marvin M. Kirsh M.D.1 and Thomas O. Orvald M.D.1

1 Department of Surgey, Section of Thoracic Surgery, The University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema are unusual complications of acute bronchial asthma. The diagnosis may be suspected by the onset of precordial chest pain, a "crunching" precordial systole sound and may be confirmed by the roentgenographic evidence of air in the mediastinum. Treatment should include 100 percent oxygen atmosphere and careful treatment of the underlying asthma.
