This is the earliest reported intervention in a syndrome which clinicians are seeing with increasing frequency. The diagnosis of a ruptured papillary muscle which is one of the disastrous complications of acute myocardial infarction requires early angiocardiography and catheterization when the condition is suspected. When adequate ventricular function is preserved, successful valve replacement is possible.
