1 Thoracic Surgical Clinic and the Cardiovascular Laboratory of the Piraeus General Hospital "Queen Frederica," Piraeus, Greece
Early and accurate diagnosis of echinococcosis of the heart is of great importance. Surgical treatment is indicated as rupture of the cyst either to the heart chambers or to the pericardial cavity may have serious complications or a fatal outcome. Diagnosis is based on the chest x-ray picture in association with the Casoni skin test, Weinberg's test, eosinophilia. The exact location of the cyst or cysts is based mostly on the ECG and angiocardiographic findings.
