A New Three Dimensional Display of the Vectorcardiogram Employing Holography

David Shander M.D.1 and Thomas M. Doran B.S.E.E.1

1 Department of Medicine, Jewish Hospital of St. Louis and Washington University School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri

A three dimensional display of the vectorcardiogram loop was obtained with the newly developed techniques of coherent light optics known as holography. Using the Frank lead system, the coordinates of 32 instantaneous vectors in a QRS complex were used in making a multiple exposure hologram which, when reilluminated with coherent light, reconstructed a three dimensional image of the VCG loop. The technique used and the methods for making quantitative measurements are described.
