A patient is presented who suffered a serious respiratory illness when heat from the oven in his kitchen vaporized nearby metallic mercury. The case cautions against the indiscriminate handling d mercury and illustrates that in a nonindustrial setting, early recognition of mercury vapor poisoning can be difficult.
