An angiographic method for volume estimation of the right and left ventricles is presented. Geometry of the cavitary image is not critical, and the method essentially consists of dividing the product of the planimetered frontal and lateral image areas by the maximal apex-base axis. The latter is obtained from the frontal image in the case of the left ventricle, and from the lateral image in the case of the right ventricle. A regression formula specific for the right and left ventricular calculations is utilized to correct the volume estimation. The method is nearly similar to the Dodge area-length technique, and is applicable for any phase of the cardiac cycle. Its utilization will facilitate comparative analysis of right and left ventricular performance in various forms of heart disease.
