A Cell-Wall Deficient Form of the Pneumococcus in a Case of Pneumonia

Antonina M. Brem Ph.D.1 and William Reidt M.D.1

1 Metropolitan Hospital, Detroit

The role of cell-wall deficient forms (CWDF) of bacteria in initiating and prolonging or both an infection is controversial. CWDF reverting to Diplococcus pneumoniae were cultured from two blood specimens through use of special laboratory techniques. Though the effect on the CWDF on this patient's unfavorable response to treatment cannot be determined, evidence of the etiology of his pneumonia which eluded physicians was provided.
