Various experimentally defined areas have been added to the pH - [HCO3-]p, diagram to aid in the diagnosis of steady state acidbase abnormalities. Patients found in a state of maximum possible compensation may be said to be in a physiologically compensated state. Two such areas that can be defined reasonably accurately at present are: physiologically compensated respiratory acidosis and physiologically compensated metabolic acidosis.
A derived term called the base excess of the extracellular fluid is introduced. It has theoretic advantages over existing derived terms for the quantification of the acid-base status and should be useful for diagnosis and therapy.
