Upper Airway Obstruction: A Rare Presentation of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Frederick N. Firestone M.D., F.C.C.P.1 and Morton J Robinson M.D.1

1 Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Department of Pathology, Mount Sinai Hospital Miami Beach, Florida and the University of Miami School of Medicine

Malignant lymphomas and leukemias rarely involve the upper airway. This report documents a unique presentation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia as an obstructing, subglottic mass. The airway was maintained by tracheotomy tube while cobalt irradiation successfully reduced the tumor. The systemic manifestations of chronic lymphocytic leukemia were managed by conventional methods.
