Rifampin-Isoniazid Compared with PAS-Isoniazid-Streptomycin in Initial Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

A Controlled Cooperative Trial

Gunnar Boman M.D.1

1 Dept. of Thoracic Medicine, Karolinska Sjukhuset, Stockholm, Sweden

In view of our results we consider refampin plus isoniazid a highly effective combination in the treatment of newly detected advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, both in terms of speed of elimination of bacilli and roentgenologic improvement. The frequency of side effects is lower and patient acceptance is better than with PAS plus isoniazid plus streptomycin. Considering the risk of primary resistance to isoniazid, we suggest giving a third drug, streptomycin or ethambutol, until the initial susceptibility test is available, at least in highly infectious and far advanced cases.
