We present the ventilatory capacity measured in 2,247 healthy Japanese adults. The mathematical means, standard deviations and 5 percent rejection limits for each ventilatory parameter were given for each age span of ten years. The regression formulae of the mathematical means for each ventilatory parameter were constructed with regard to sex, age and body height. We proposed to take the 5 percent rejection limit instead of mathematical mean for the diagnostic normal limit. Annual decline of ventilatory parameters estimated on follow-up observations of healthy subjects was compared with the corresponding annual change represented by the referred regression formulae for the mathematical means estimated on the healthy population. Consistent discrepancy was not found between the two observations.
