Although a value of 500 ohms often has been used as the resistance of a saline filled plastic catheter, both calculated and measured values exceed 2 million ohms. Because the current which this catheter could carry is inversely proportional to its resistance, this resistance should be considered wherever arterial catheters and patient safety are of concern.
