Spontaneous Pneumopericardium in Acute Asthma: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Tony M. Toledo MC1; William L. Moore Jr. MC1; Daniel A. Nash MC1; and Robert L. North MC1

1 Department of Medicine, Brooke General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas

A 15-year-old boy presented in an acute asthmatic attack. Appropriate treatment abated the attack, and he was discharged in four days. Admission chest roentgenogram revealed a small pneumopericardium. Review of the English literature failed to disclose any previous reports of spontaneous pneumopericardium associated with an acute asthmatic attack. The various causes of pneumopericardium are discussed, and the pathophysiologic mechanism resulting in extrapulmonic air in asthma is reviewed. The clinical features and broad principles of treatment of pneumopericardium are included.
