Transbronchoscopis Lung Biopsy for Diffuse Pulmonary Diseases: Technique and Results in 450 Cases

Howard A. Andersen M.D., F.C.C.P.1 and Robert S. Fontana M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota

We have described a technique of transbronchoscopis biopsy of the lung and the use of this technique in patients with diffuse diseases of the lungs. Satisfactory pulmonary tissue was obtained in 378 of 450 cases (84 percent). Pneumothorax was noted in 14 percent of the patients, and mediastinal emphysema and significant bleeding each were encountered in about 1 percent. There was one death. We have found that transbronchoscopic lung biopsy has been helpful in the diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary disease.
