Preoperative and early postoperative studies of esophageal manometry were performed in 16 patients who underwent a Nissen fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux. All had immediate relief of reflux and the amplitude and length of the inferior esophageal sphincter increased from a mean of 5.2 cm of water ± 1.3 to 15.2 cm of water and 3.0 cm ± 0.4 to 5.0 cm ± 0.4 respectively.
