This is a review of 215 patients with primary tumors of the mediastinum seen over a 20-year period. We wish to emphasize the clinical and pathologic considerations of this heterogenous group of tumors. The fact that 94 of the patients were asymptomatic stresses the importance of routine chest examination. Since the various tumors require specific surgical, irradiation, drug and combined therapy, definitive tissue diagnosis is mandatory for proper management.
