Increased systemic blood pressure after the administration of digitalis glycosides has been described both in clinical and experimental studies carried out under anesthesia. In awake and conscious man, digitalis-induced hypertension has been reported only rarely. However, hypertension occurs more often in conscious man in the presence of cardiovascular disease. To draw attention to the possibility of undesirable and even life-threatening complications, a patient is reported who developed accelerated hypertension and a stroke after the administration of ouabain. The possible mechanisms and therapy of digitalis-induced hypertension are discussed.
