Tuberculosis of the vertebral spine is an uncommon condition in the western world. Five patients are presented to illustrate the diagnostic pitfalls and problems concerned with the diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis. A brief review of clinical features, pathogenesis, pathology, radiology appearance and principles of therapy is presented.
