Our results cannot be explained by the classic theory of asthma and we believe that this theory must be modified. Although some direct, local constriction of airway smooth muscle may occur, a major component of the acute bronchoconstrictor response to antigen inhalation appears to involve a vagally-mediated reflex, possibly arising from epithelial irritant receptors in the airways.
