The records of 225 patients with acute myocardial infarction are reviewed, with emphasis on 83 infractions occurring in elderly patients. Acute myocardial infarctions beyond the age of 70 years is associated with a higher mortality than in younger patients, but the mortality is not so high as suggested by previous studies. In this series, the mortality for elderly patients was only 25 percent. The elderly patients had a greater frequency of left bundle branch block and atrial tachyarrhythmias during the course of an acute myocardial infarction. In our opinion, the patient with an acute myocardial infarction should be monitored and treated intensively, regardless of age.
