Fatal Pulmonary Infarction in a Patient with Sickle Cell Trait

It is not generally appreciated that sickle cell trait can lead to diffuse sickling and be fatal under certain circumstances. This report demonstrates that widespread sickling occurred in our patient with sickle cell trait and was responsible for his death. It is suggested that sickle cell trait should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all Negro patients who present with suspected vasoocclusive episode.
