A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus developed spiking fevers, which were controlled by parenteral steroids, and, later, pericardial friction rub. Staphylococcal pericarditis was diagnosed by periocardiocentesis; no pathogenic organisms were found in blood or sputum. The infection did not respond to methicillin, and irrigation with Dakin's solution through a cardiac window was required to cure the pericarditis.
