Thomas T. Yoshikawa M.D.1; Anthony W. Chow M.D.1; John Z. Montgomerie M.D.1; and Lucien B. Guze M.D.1

Two patients with paratracheal abscesses following transtracheal aspiration are described. This complication has been uncommonly reported in the literature. Catheter contamination of the puncture site with tracheobronchial flora or local de novo infection appear to be the pathogenic mechanisms.
