Blood cultures taken from 40 women before and within one to five minutes after biopsy of the cervix were bacteriologically negative. Despite special culturing techniques, transient bacteremia with aerobes or anaerobes was not detected during this period. Chemoprophylaxis against bacterial endocarditis does not appear indicated in patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing this procedure.
