Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Report of Survival after Two Episodes

Roberto Llamas M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Associate Director, Cardiopulmonary Laboratory, Department of Medicine, Miami Heart Institute, Miami Beach; Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Miami Medical School, Miami

A 45-year-old white man who survived two episodes of the adult respiratory distress syndrome is discussed. After being on cardiopulmonary bypass twice, he demonstrated no clinical, physiologic, or radiologic evidence of pulmonary impairment 19 months after the first and 12 months after the second episode. This illustrates that in spite of severe pulmonary damage produced by the syndrome, some patients may recover without sequelae.
