1 Medical Department I and the Department of Clinical Physiology I, Sahlgren's Hospital, University of Göteborg, Göteborg, Sweden
A representative population sample of men, all aged 54 years, was examined. Strong relationships between smoking habits and cough with sputum, wheezing and dyspnea were found. There were also, independent of smoking habits, relations between wheezing, dyspnea and forced expiratory volume in one second corrected for the anthropometric variables (FEV1 index). A series of variables reflecting work performance were significantly correlated with FEV1 index and these correlations were not bound to the smoking habits.
