The cells of rat lung homogenate are distributed in a reproducible pattern over the density range 1.02-1.10. The distribution can be changed by varying the composition of the fluid in which the cells are suspended. The density distribution shows that the cells can be separated into two distinct classes, those having densities greater than 1.045 and those having densities less than 1.045.

The use of narrower density intervals may be expected to define more clearly the density distribution profile. These data are being used in designing experiments to isolate cells within selected density ranges. These cells will be subjected to further isolation procedures in which a different cell characteristic, such as size, surface charge, or immunologic activity, will be utilized.
