The Evolving Regulatory Environment and Bedside Metabolic Monitoring of the Acute Care Patient

Quality assurance practices and the regulations that serve as society's recognition of the need for these procedures need to be modified. As technology changes, allowing testing to be performed closer to the patient, so must quality assurance techniques and regulations. Quality assurance must be made to match the potential sources of error that are inherent in testing performed by individuals without laboratory training carried out at the point of care of patients.
