Re: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and nosocomial infections

psborade{at}hotmail.com Prashant S Borade, et al.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) predisposes an individual to community-acquired infections. However, the relationship between COPD and nosocomial infections is less clear.

A prospective study was conducted in 499 consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit without clinical or laboratory evidence of community-acquired infections over a 6-month period.

The incidence of nosocomial infections was not significantly different comparing patients with COPD (26%) and without COPD (20%). Mortality was 47% in ventilated patients.

Patients with COPD are no more susceptible to develop nosocomial infections than patients without COPD.
