This very plausible study contains results which may be partially explained by the phagocytosis of mineral particles by macrophages and their transport in other organs of the body.

It is known that inhaled mineral fibers are so ingested in lungs and can be found e.g. in urine of occupationally exposed workers (1).

It seems that the phagocytosis is associated with a respiratory burst as the breath pentane and ethane content is significantly increased after exposure to mineral dust (2).
