Environmental asbestos fibres are inhaled, distributed in the body and have biological effects as shown by the investigation. In a study on occupational chrysotile fibre exposure, it was found that Swiss control persons excreted chrysotile fibres in their urine while a Finnish control did not. It is known that Swiss rock contain asbestos minerals while in the Finnish rockbed they are sparse (1). Thus, it might be very interesting to control the environmental exposure to them by urinalysis for the fibres. 1. Savolainen H, Cosca-Sliney R, Guillemin M. Detection of occupational exposure to inorganic fibres by urinary fibre analysis. Occup Hyg (1996) 3: 351-7. |
