Gentlemen ; Kudos are in order for your study. Unfortunately, many of us have literally been forced into premature retirement by sleep disorders and their compounding effects. The biggest problem we face is public ignorance and professional ignorance. I have found that very few physicians understand how repeated hypoxemia can cause serious cumulative damage in patients. A very scary proposition !! The government officials responsible for health and financial matters also stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the tremendous consequences, both to the patients and to the health system, of sustained failure to recognise and acknowledge the seriousness of sleep disorders. 1. How can we raise the consciousness of those in authority, to the very high mortality of osa patients who refuse or ignore treatment ?? 2. As a patient who has been disabled by multiple sleep disorders, I have a very meager existence, and can not afford to pay for publications to prove our cases in formal hearings. Can arrangements be made for bonafide patients with sleep disorders, or the support groups working with these people, to receive reprints of articles for selected discussions and distribution? With the last item, I am certain that if need be, the cost to do this could easily be processed as a 'charitable donation' to assist patients with sleep disorders. Mike O'Reilly RM, CET |
